This programme:  180 credits

 

Aims and intentions

The programme will explore the nature of reader response and associated theory; how children’s literature shapes and perpetuates and challenges social and cultural norms. It includes critical analysis of a wide range of texts for children of all ages including young adults, and critical appraisal of authors and genres. You will use analytical tools to make connections with the application of children’s literature to a range of professional/social contexts.

 

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:

Through the use of various teaching and learning strategies you will develop a critical and reflective awareness of a range of texts and genres. Teaching and learning will enable the exploration of current research and contemporary issues. 

 

Assessment

There are no examinations. There are opportunities for oral presentations as well as applied study of the use of texts in professional/social contexts. Written assignments will relate to the analysis of texts. Students will be involved in group, pair and individual work and related informal discussion is a key element in all modules.
